What is the Jones Act?

The Jones Act, also known as Section 27, is a legal statute created during the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 whose primary aim is to support and sustain the U.S. maritime industry and the rights and safety of those who are employed in it. This act insures that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports must be transported solely by vessels owned and operated by U.S. citizens, but more importantly supports the rights of all workers on those vessels who have suffered injury or death due to negligence of their employers. Seamen injured or killed due to negligent or irresponsible command or conduct are entitled to submit a claim under the protection of the Jones Act, and they or their loved ones left behind could may qualify for compensation, as is their legal right.
